Cornish Maine Boudoir Studio // Beyond Sexy: The Emotional Side of Boudoir
When people think of boudoir photography, they often picture something purely sexy—lingerie, sultry poses, and an album meant to be gifted to a significant other. And while, yes, that’s part of it, what people don’t always realize is how deeply emotional and healing these sessions can be. My favorite clients? The ones who come to me as part of their emotional healing journey. The ones who, whether they realize it at the time or not, are doing this for themselves just as much—if not more—than for anyone else.
One of my absolute favorite sessions was with a client who had come out of a terrible marriage. Her ex had made her feel less than—less than beautiful, less than desirable, less than enough. When she finally left that relationship, she found herself in a new one. This time, her boyfriend was an incredible person, the type of partner everyone deserves—kind, supportive, and constantly reminding her just how amazing she was. So, she decided to book a boudoir session, initially as a gift for him.
As we planned her session, we talked about what she wanted, and she told me it was for him—to surprise him with an album because he was just that wonderful. But as we went through the process, something started to shift. From shopping for new lingerie to having her hair and makeup done, she started to feel something she hadn’t in a long time—confidence. Excitement. A spark of joy in seeing herself in a new way.
The session itself was incredible. As we moved through different poses and played with light, she relaxed and laughed. She looked stunning—not just because of the hair and makeup or the lingerie, but because she was finally seeing herself as beautiful.
Fast forward to her reveal appointment at my studio. As she flipped through her images, she had a moment—a moment I see often but never take for granted. She stared at the screen, silent at first. Then, with tears in her eyes, she whispered, “I didn’t even recognize myself.” And then the happy tears came.
Right there, in that moment, I watched her let go of years of emotional baggage. She wasn’t just looking at photos; she was seeing herself through fresh eyes—eyes that weren’t clouded by someone else’s negativity. And while the session started as something for him, she realized it had been for her all along.
These are the moments I live for. The ones that remind me that boudoir photography isn’t just about looking sexy—it’s about reclaiming yourself. It’s about seeing the strength, beauty, and worth that was there all along.
So, if you’ve ever thought, Maybe one day…, let me tell you—your moment is now. Do it for you. You deserve it.
